Koskie: Climbing Back to the Big Time

Head trauma can be a part of life for the professional athlete. Whether it be football, hockey, or even baseball, concussions are a very tragic reality, and can end a career before it’s time.
On July 5th, 2006 Koskie suffered a concussion against the Reds. He flipped backwards awkwardly and suffered a case of whiplash while trying to shag a foul ball. What happened next would for all intent and purposes, end his career. He was a career .275 hitter, 124 Home Runs, 506 RBI’s. Corey began to suffer the symptoms of Post Concussion Syndrome.
Post Concussion Syndrome can last days, weeks, or in this case years after a brain trauma. With it comes headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating. Details about it are sketchy. But it is very real and in this case, put a life on hold. Corey really didn’t believe he would ever play baseball again. He just wanted his life back.
Now he has a chance of doing JUST that and possibly making the Twins roster. He has been in their training camp, hoping to be signed to a minor league contract and maybe fighting his way back up. He will be playing for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. He’s older…35 now. His battle has just begun. Being a Major League Baseball Player is suppose to be about dreams….and maybe this is his time to finish a dream he started. In a baseball world full of scandal, steroids, wondering who the real heroes are, maybe it’s this quiet man. While AROD is doing photo shoots on his innocence and collecting millons, here is Koskie. Stepping over shadows and fears to wear cleats again. Why? Because he’s a ballplayer.
I am really pulling for him. Whether he ever plays on the level he did before the injury, I believe in trying and fighting, he is doing exactly what he said he wanted from all of this…to reclaim his life.
Wishing him the best and it’s just nice to see his name in the news and his feet on a baseball field again.
