Halfway Home

I’ve been pretty much oozing non-stop over Ryan Zimmerman for the last couple of weeks to everyone I know, so I figured I might as well let the lust spill over to this place. He’s blowing my mind right now. In fact, I’ve pained through the last ten Washington Nationals games, just to see him hit. Yes, it was worth it.

He singled in the first inning Sunday evening off Arizona Diamondbacks righty Max Scherzer to bring his amazing hitting streak to 28 games.

Zimmerman has ridden this impressive streak straight to the halfway point between nothing and history: Joe DiMaggio’s hit-steak record of 56 games. Now, he’s no DiMaggio, he has recorded the most hits in consecutive games for any Washington-based player, ever. Making history must feel pretty sweet.

When MLB.com asked him what he thought of his accomplishment so far, he replied, “Halfway huh? There’s a long way to go. I’m concentrating on [extending the streak] to 29. I really don’t think about it or anything past the next game.”

So humble. Earlier in the streak Senator Crushingham (yeah, still working out the kinks with the whole nickname thing) commented that he’d trade all of these hits for a few more wins for his 10-19 Nationals… except he’s likely one of the main reasons they’ve won those ten games in the first place. Geez, they’re terrible. Example: they hit four bombs Sunday and still managed to lost to the D’Backs, 10-8.

At the end of the day, Zim has 12 doubles, 6 homers, 22 RBIs, a .346 batting average and a .394 on-base percentage. Yep, this is love.

All he needs to do is get at least one hit during his next 28 games. The earliest this could happen is June 10th. No sweat, right? I have faith that he can beat one of the most hallowed feats in the history of the game… or maybe that’s just my new-found, unhealthy obsession talking.
Zimmerman will take a crack at nailing one in consecutive game #29 when the Nats kick off a three game series against Randy Johnson (looking for career victory #298) and the San Francisco Giants at 10:15 ET tonight. Good luck, hot stuff! And good luck to you too, Big Unit.
