Week 2: Game of the Week

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys
Sunday Night Football and the first regular season game in Jerry Jones’s new billion dollar playground provide enough reason alone to make the Giants vs Cowboys game of the week. Next throw in the fact that they’re both great teams with one goal, winning the Super Bowl. These 2 NFC East rivals both currently hold a 1-0 record and neither can afford to lose a division game in what will surely be a tight 3 team division race, that probably won’t be decided until Week 17.
What makes this game even more exciting is the different mentalities both teams possess. Put simply and nicely, the Cowboys are a flashy team. They play in a new billion dollar stadium and use a high powered vertical offense. Their roster is loaded with talent in the form of star football players, wannabe celebrities, and worst of all rock stars. They always find their way into the media for sound bites and photo opts .
This style hasn’t worked to their advantage recently, unless you consider staring in Hard Knocks before the 2009 season successful. After all the hype and television time, they even managed to miss the playoffs last year. On the other hand, the Giants play power football. They believe in running the ball and playing tough in the trenches.
Speaking of trenches, lucky for me I was in one when ex-Giant receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally fired a shot inside a New York City nightclub. After releasing Plaxico last season, this will be the Giants first full season without a clear cut number one receiver. The Giants also stand for discipline, respect, and hard work. All of which can be disregarded if you’re a big enough star like Osi Umenyiora. Osi recently skipped practice after a quarrel with new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. However Osi hasn’t missed a beat on the field, he scored a touchdown last week after forcing a Jason Campbell fumble.
The Giants have a slightly revamped roster from when they had their amazing Super Bowl run in 2008, but most of the big names are still wearing blue and red. These two teams are very familiar with each other and this has the makings of a great game. I like Dallas 31-27, the enormous television screen hanging over the middle of the field gives the Cowboys a 4 point advantage.
