Hal Steinbrenner really wants the new Yankee stadium to get in on some college football mula. He already has a game between Army and Notre Dame on tap for next year. And Army is penciled in 4 games in the next 5 years. And now, Steinbrenner is ready to unveil his plan for a bowl game to be played in Yankee Stadium. And it shall be called, the Yankee Bowl. Of course!
NEW YORK — New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and the commissioners of the Big East and Big 12 will announce at a news conference Wednesday the formation of the Yankee Bowl, to be held at the new Yankee Stadium beginning with the 2010-11 postseason, according to sources with knowledge of the event.
The game, which will seek NCAA certification next spring, would reportedly pit the Big East’s fourth-place team against the Big 12′s No. 7 selection. Organizers plan to hold the first edition between Dec. 29, 2010 and Jan. 2, 2011.
A game between the Big East’s fourth-place team and the Big 12′s No. 7 selection in the dead of winter sounds like the ultimate matchup, right? A must watch game, right? No? Well before you pass judgement, let’s at least look at who would’ve played in this game last season.
Big 12′s No. 7 selection: Kansas (8-5)
Big East’s fourth-place team: Rutgers (8-5)
Now who wouldn’t pay top dollar to see Kansas and Rutgers lock horns? I know I wouldn’t.
