Explode in Sports: Five Weeks in the Books

First of all, there are a few teams who have a considerable amount of talent who are really struggling in the early weeks of their schedule. For instance, the Kansas City Chiefs went out and got Matt Cassel, who really was productive with New England last year. He has a solid back in Larry Johnson and a pretty speedy target to throw to in Dwyane Bowe. Mike Vrabel was also added on the defensive side of the ball, but yet the Chiefs are win less. Through the first four weeks of the season they looked totally disorganized and could not move the ball to save their lives. Last week though, against the Dallas Cowboys they showed a lot of confidence and took the Boys to overtime. In the extra frame, Dallas mustered up a simple out pattern to Miles Austin that turned into the inevitable winning score due to lack of tackling on the Chiefs part. Will the Chiefs ever get it together?
Dallas has had a rather rocky start to the season, when most expected them to be contending for the NFC East Title. Okay, you’re right, I may have rushed that prediction a bit because there are only five weeks in the books. But how about the inability to beat the teams that they should, handily? The Chiefs took them to over time and are considered amongst the worst teams in the league. They beat Carolina, but at the end of the first half got booed off the field of their brand new multi-billion dollar stadium. Their road trip to Denver produced a loss at the end of the game 17-10, because Brandon Marshall caught a pass and ran every which direction between defenders and around them for the game winning score. Tony Romo then came down the field and went to Sam Hurd twice on the goal line, which produced two incomplete passes. The kicker is that Romo had no idea it was fourth down! Problems seem to be brewing and it may be a matter of saving their season as the tougher part of the schedule presents itself.
The Broncos are 5-0 and sitting rather pretty in the AFC West division under the new direction of coach Josh McDaniel. Also, Kyle Orton seems to be grasping his role in leading the team. The biggest surprise is that trouble receiver Marshall is smiling and enjoying himself. Do you think that would be different if they were 2-3? I do.
The four top teams that are really rolling this year are doing it on both sides of the ball. The Giants are 5-0 and have put away teams from the get go. They pitched a shut out this year in Tampa Bay and Eli Manning is really managing his new receiving core up and down the field on opposing defenses. Their schedule too will get tougher as they visit another undefeated opponent this week in New Orleans. The Saints and Drew Brees are simply rolling. Jeremy Shockey is healthy and becoming the most productive since who can remember and their defense led by Darren Sharper is keeping opponents at bay. This week’s contest should be a real slug fest down in the city of Mardi Gras. The Colts led by Peyton Manning have put up 30 or more points in three out of the first five games. Scary huh? Manning is finding Reggie Wayne as well as the new bloomer in Pierre Garcon. Defensively they have held opponents to 12,17,10,9 points with the exception of facing Miami and the Wild Cat offense. That game they gave up 23.
So what can we see thus far? Simply put, the elite teams that are sitting with no wins or losses are really performing on both sides of the ball. With the exception of Denver you could arguably say the take care of the teams they should. Denver’s only win that could have been predicted other wise one could say would be the Cowboys and/or the Patriots this past week. This season looks to be competitive and interesting as we move on. As fans and writers, lets let the drama unfold.
