Randall Carroll and Norm Chow have three things in common.  They were both at one time or another committed to the USC football program.  They’ve since become members of team UCLA.  And most recently, this coach and player are now tied to a Twitter incident where Carroll apparently used a racial slur in reference to his offensive coordinator.

When Carroll snubbed USC to sign with their crosstown rivals, he memorized his script and told how UCLA is the developer of men, and not just football players.  But apparently the one thing not taken into consideration or missing from his propaganda page, was the frustration, and losses, that come with a rebuilding program.

After a fast start to the season, the Bruins have lost 4 straight games, and the offense has been dismal at best.  Wearing his emotions on his Twitter sleeve, Carroll delivered this message, as reported by the Los Angeles Times:

“man oregon, stanford and cal should have been easy wins ,, but [expletive] thys [racial slur] norm chow dnt be trustin us ,, so it is what it is.”

Norm Chow is of Chinese decent, and in a private conversation, those words may not be given a second thought and likely written off as a words and phrases too commonly used by the culture.  But to publish the derogatory term in this PC world, is to create an atmosphere of discomfort worthy of discipline and correction.

The Twitter account has since been terminated, and I wouldn’t expect much backlash for the word used, as much I would expect some type of disciplinary action for the forum of choice and airing of frustrations against his coach and program.  In college sports, it’s “protect the program” when dealing with the public, which is why some athletic departments look to restrict players from using social networking sites.

Some believed Carroll changed his commitment from USC to UCLA because of the presence and history of Norm Chow.  Judging by the controversial tweet, it’s not what he expected it to be.  Would he have played as a freshman at USC? Maybe. Maybe not.  But at least he would be winning.
