As I was counting down the minutes until my workday would end, I casually listened to the Mike Missanelli show on ESPN Radio in Philadelphia. All of a sudden, I thought I heard someone say, “Boise State,” “Preseason,” and “No. 2.”

Now I wasn’t sure if those words went together, so I went to good ‘ol Google and did some searching. After I typed in the longest search known to mankind I clicked on the first link I saw. I noticed a scantily clad woman in some ad and then my eyes wandered over to what I was actually looking for.

Well I’ll be damned. There they were. The one and only Boise State Broncos were ranked No. 2 in the country behind defending national champion Alabama.

Thank God I raised the arm rests on my swivel chair; otherwise I would have fallen out of my seat, hit the office floor, and bruised my handsome face.

But how could this be?

Who in the wide world of college football actually thinks the Blue-Turf Ponies can be a preseason No. 2 team?

The Web site actually had a link to each team and I soon found out Boise State was returning 11 starters on offense and 10 on defense.

Whoop-de-do.

Oh, I didn’t know everyone in the country was supposed to fear a defense that went on the road and gave up 34 points to Fresno State, 35 points to Louisiana Tech and 33 points at home to Nevada.

I couldn’t resist, but I had to find out who these stiffs were going to lose to first. So I went back to my buddy Google and typed in, “2010 Boise State Football Schedule.”

Once again the first link guided me to an answer. Even though the 2010 schedule only has four opponents listed right now, the first loss stuck out like Boise State being ranked No.v2 in a preseason poll. The game takes place Saturday, October 2 at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland against the Virginia Tech Hokies.

It doesn’t matter how poorly the Hokies are playing: they will beat the Blue-Turf Ponies by at least 14 points.

The college football world, myself included, could not stomach hearing about Boise State potentially playing for a national championship.

Truth be told I am a supporter of a playoff system. I think it would be great to give Boise State a chance to win a national championship. But in all honesty I know they can’t win it. The stance is more about doing the right thing, even though it may not be what I truly believe.

It’s kind of like politely saying “No, thank you,” to the whack jobs in the middle of the mall who try to push some strange lotion or headache remedy on you. You would much rather tell them how you really feel, but that’s not the right thing to do, so you restrain yourself.

The right thing to do when hearing and seeing that Boise State was ranked No. 2 in a preseason poll is to shrug it off and feel good for the underdog.

What I wanted to do was slightly different; I wanted to hop onto a Web site that allows fans to voice their opinions and blast the ranking, Boise State, and anyone else who actually thinks this team deserves to be ranked this high.

So here we are. I’m ranting and raving and you’re reading.

How can you tell me this team is going to be good next year?

They beat Oregon at home in the first game of the year before the Ducks went on a tear.

Great job, I’m not impressed.

And then they cap off the year against TCU.

Wow. Can you sense the enthusiasm here?

If it wasn’t for Andy Dalton letting the moment get the best of him TCU probably would have won the game. Boise State didn’t do anything special in that game. They crowded the line of scrimmage, shut down the run and then asked a nervous wreck to beat them with this arm and head.

Dalton couldn’t get out of his own way and basically handed the game to Boise State.

It was nothing short of embarrassing, and now people actually think the Broncos are worthy of a No. 2 ranking?

And don’t even get me started on their quarterback.

Kellen Moore stinks.

This kid looks like he is throwing against a 50 mph wind every time he zips an out route. And his deep ball is atrocious. It looks like he is throwing a punt.

Seriously though—someone in the NFL should draft this kid so he can toss punts up in the air to give the kicker a rest during practice. Every time he threw a deep ball I expected to see that little hang-time clock that used to appear in the upper right when someone punted.

So go ahead Boise State. Enjoy the preseason ranking because you won’t get through the first week in October before you are exposed as nothing more than a cute little football team.

And the last time I checked, “cute” doesn’t win national championships, and it certainly shouldn’t give you a No. 2 preseason ranking.
