Ben Sheets Saves the Athletics!

Alright, I may have gotten a little excited with the title.

The Oakland Athletics have signed free agent pitcher Ben Sheets to a $10 million, one-year contract.

At 31 years old, Sheets has spent a considerable amount of time on the disabled list. In fact, he didn’t even pitch in the majors last season since he was recovering from elbow surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon.

He did toss the ball around a little last week, though, in a pitching session for some scouts in his native Louisiana. Apparently, the A’s were impressed.

The four-time All-Star righty spent his first eight big league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, compiling a 86-83 record and 3.72 ERA, fanning a career-high 264 batters back in 2004. Those were the days.

Hopefully he can be that guy this season for Oakland, who finished with 75 wins for the second straight year after dropping their final seven games to end up last in the AL West. In short, they sucked ass.

Sheets might even fill some seats for Billy Beane, whose club saw a major league worst attendance total in 2009 – with just 1,408,783 fans showing up to ball games.
