It ‘s a mute an unimportant point whether the 15 minutes of fame that Dallas Braden began accruing after his pugnacious rant at Alex Rodriguez is extended much longer. And simply pitching a perfect game, as stellar an achievement as that is, is no guarantee of continuing fame or sustained success, especially if it’s a singular occurrence in an otherwise mediocre career, a plateau that Braden is still looking up at.

So I was puzzled by all the all attention that the media had devoted to a player who, before last Sunday’s perfect game, was known only for that outburst and his continued self-righteous blathering about A-Rod simply because Rodriguez broke what Braden considers to be a cardinal rule of baseball by harmlessly crossing over the pitcher’s mound on his way back to first base (although many other queried major leaguers had never heard of that unspoken imperative).

But, now that we know more about Braden and his associations, I wonder why the media continues to glorify a player who has serially threatened another player and, by his own admission, hangs out with and, possibly, abets felons.

One can certainly celebrate the athletic accomplishment of the pitcher, but let’s do it without making a virtue of the person’s vices.
