Let’s do away with the NBA Lottery

After seeing insult added to the Nets lousy season I think its time to do away with the NBA Draft Lottery. The Nets were only able to muster 12 wins last season and now instead of having the number 1 pick like they would in any other sport they now get the 3rd pick in the draft. This is just out of reach of both premier players John Wall and Evan Turner. This happens all to often in the NBA draft. Only 1 team since 2004 has won the lottery that has had the best chance to. The team that is the worse obviously needs the help so why punish them? I know the lottery was put in place so teams wouldn’t lose intentionally down the stretch, but it only seems to be hurting these bad teams. No other major sports hold a lottery to figure out the top half of the draft order and the NBA shouldn’t either. Sure they may end up with a good player but this team needed/wanted Wall or Turner.
It’s also a slap in the face to the fans. New Jersey fans had to endure a 12 win season, being the worst team in the league, and then get the 3rd pick in the draft. This is a team that is talent depleted for the most part aside from Harris and Lopez. There are debates in most sports about changing something like the bowl season or the NCAA basketball tourney but the lottery doesn’t make much sense to me. I understand that its meant to keep from people trying to be the worst toward the end of the season to get the #1 pick but it still hurts teams like the Nets all to often.
New Jersey will likely get a very good player still but not in the same capacity as Wall or Turner. They could also look to trade down between 6-10 if there is a different prospect they like. The Nets have some cap room open so they maybe able to get a solid player or 2 in a trade and some draft picks. No matter what New Jersey does though it wont be as good as getting Wall or Turner.
