Have the Yankees Permanently Ruined Joba Chamberlain?

Three years ago, the New York Yankees brought up a young reliever named Joba Chamberlain. He wowed people in his first year pitching with 0.38 ERA in 19 games.

In that first year though, the Yankees stood to something that good coined the “Joba Rules”, which was the Yankees conserving the amount of innings Chamberlain would pitch. Many people said he could be the replacement for Mariano Rivera when he retired.

Leading up to the 2008 season, the national media made a big deal over whether Joba would be a starter or stay in the bullpen. Yankees manager Joe Giradi decided that he would start the season in the bullpen. On June 3, the Yankees made him a starter and he made his first career start against the Toronto Blue Jays, which he only lasted 2 and 1/3 innings while giving up 2 runs.

The Yankees were still conserving Chamberlain and making sure he didn’t let him pitch too much.

In 2009 though, the Yankees announced Joba would start the season as a starter.

Even though he wasn’t outstanding, Joba did a fair job as the #5 starter.

For 2010 though, the Yankees moved Chamberlain again. He is not suceeding in his return to the bullpen.

After today’s lost to the Indians, Chamberlain doesn’t look like the reliever he once was. And I’m pointing the finger at the Yankees.

The Yankees have moved Chamberlain around so much it would be hard for any pitcher to adjust to the change. In just four years he has gone from the bullpen to starting and back to the bullpen. It is the Yankees fault.

The question every Yankees fan wants to know is if Chamberlain is permanently ruined. And that is something I cannot answer and only time can tell.

Hopefully he can re-adjust himself to the bullpen, but it is very possible that Joba Chamberlain is permanently ruined.
