World Cup: NIG is not short for Nigeria

FBL-WC2010-MATCH07-GER-AUS

There is both fun and folly to be had in shortening the names of the 32 World Cup teams, especially while Tweeting.

Some are more touchy than others.

Fun: SPA for Spain or BRA for Brazil. Folly: JAP for Japan or NIG for Nigeria.

Somebody Tweeted the latter during Argentina’s 1-0 win over NIG today.
I advised the person to go with the more official and less offensive
NGA. For those who don’t see the problem, God bless your innocence.

Here are the 32 teams competing in South Africa and how their team
names would be shortened under the NIG rule – simply using the first
three letters of the country’s first name:

Group A
South Africa: SOU
Mexico: MEX
Uruguay: URU
France: FRA

Group B
Korea Republic: KOR
Argentina: ARG
Nigeria: NIG

Group D

Group F

New Zealand: NEW

Group G
