If Favre Actually Retires, What Will His Legacy Be?

Packers Favre Football
Today, sources told the Associated Press that Brett Favre has notified the Minnesota Vikings he would not return for the 2010 season. But knowing Favre, I’m not buying into it.

The Vikings play the Saints week one and I know Favre is dying for revenge. Nobody wants to end their 19-year, record breaking career with an interception in the playoffs to cost their team a chance at a Super Bowl. Yeah, the ankle probably IS killing him, but I just have a feeling he’ll return to at least play in week one.

But if he actually does retire, what will he be remembered as?

It was March 4, 2008. Favre officially announced his departure from the NFL with tears in his eyes as well as every Packer fan on the planet. He was a legend. He threw the most touchdown passes ever and beat every team in the NFL besides the Packers. He went out on top and a Green Bay legend.

But then it all changed.

Favre filed for reinstatement on July the 29th and was traded to the New York Jets for a fourth round pick. That’s right, a fourth round pick. He was now not really cared for. He threw 22 touchdowns and 22 picks while accumulating a mere 9-7 record and on February 11, 2009 Favre told the Jets organization he was calling it quits. An MRI revealed Favre had a torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder and it made sense Favre’s career was over. He didn’t go out the best way, but hey, he was still a man that most loved and went out on his own terms.

But then it happened again. Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings.

To Packer fans and others, he was a villain. He left the city where everyone loved him and then goes to the rival team two years later. C’mon man. But it wasn’t a reason to worry. He was coming off of surgery on his throwing arm and wouldn’t be the same. Look at how he played last year! Maybe this would make the Vikings worse. But never question Brett.

Favre led the Vikings to a 12-4 record and took them to the NFC championship game. A Pro-Bowl selection who had now become the first player to beat all 32 teams in the National Football League. He was the most controversial player in the NFL. Hated, loved, respected, were just a few words to describe how some felt about Favre. Although he threw an interception to cost his team a chance at the Super Bowl, you have to believe he was a big part in getting the Vikings there in the first place.

Now Favre is done (maybe).

As of now, his legacy can be perceived in many different ways. An iron man who played until he was 40. A traitor who left his team only to go to their rival. A record breaker who’s Hall of Fame status speaks for itself.

Those are what others think, but now the question is- What do you think of Brett Favre?
