Should Military Service Be Mandatory?

Another essay of mine. Just posting to generate discussion. I personally have nothing against our military men and women. I actually am thankful to all those who serve our country and fight for our freedom…

Military service should not be mandatory because men and women should be given the choice on whether they want to put their life on the line and serve their country. No normal person in today’s world would want to be forced to do anything they do not want to do. If military service is made mandatory and people are obligated to serve their country, we would have many U.S. citizens fleeing to other countries such as Canada and Mexico so that they can get away from the calling of the military service.

Secondly, there are also people who will decide to follow their government’s policy but when they actually have to go fight in a war, they will flat out refuse. They would do this mainly because of their belief that killing others is wrong even if that other person is their enemy and it would cause a lot of problems for the government and military officials. There is absolutely not enough money in the world to lock up or ensure that people in today’s world would serve in the military and fight for their country if mandated to do so.

In other cases, people would rather go to college right after high school to get their degree and become doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers or even architects. But if military service is made mandatory, all those dreams and goals will be put on hold or will disappear all together. Most of the time, when people put off their education for a period of time, whether it is short or long, they no longer have an interest to go back to school and get their degrees. They would rather earn their money right then and there instead of having to go back to school and use their time studying when they could be making money. I have also heard that, as you get older, there are a lot of distractions and also your mind no longer retains information as well as it did when you were younger.

Some may disagree and say that military service should be mandatory because the experiences you can receive from being in the military are one of a kind and cannot be obtained anywhere else. Even though they may not feel this way, it does not necessarily mean that they would go and fight for their country if ordered to do so. There are a lot of people in this world that say one thing but when it comes time for them to do it, they choose not to. It really is a shame to see that some people have just a voice and are not helpers for the cause.

The enticement of military benefits does not help matters either; all military service personnel receive great benefits after they serve their country. Depending on their specific circumstance, the government will either pay them a pension or even pay for the veteran to go to college on a college scholarship. Also, if there were a war going on, more people would come back in need of psychiatric help due to the traumatization and the amount of stress that being a member of the armed forces can cause. It would also affect the country’s economic growth.

Usually when a war occurs, more of the taxpayers’ money goes into building the military and getting more resources for them, which allows them to achieve the highest level of efficiency possible in the war so that they can come out on top. The citizens will protest the tax increase as their money will be spent to help the military and not the country. This will create turmoil in the country between the citizens and the government because as long as the taxpayers’ money goes towards the military, there will forever be an increase in taxes and a lot of unsatisfied citizens.
