Milla’s 2011 NFL Draft Grades

luke-stocker-285x300

I am going to keep adding teams until I have one for all 32 teams.

Arizona Cardinals
#5. Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
#38. Ryan Williams, RB, Virginia Tech
#69 Robert Housler, TE, Florida Atlantic
#103. Sam Acho, DE/LB, Texas
#136. Anthony Sherman, FB, Connecticut
#171. Quan Sturdivant, LB, North Carolina
#184. David Carter, DT, UCLA
#249. Demarco Sampson, WR, San Diego State

Grade: A-
Analysis: I like what the Cardinals did here. They went with BPA in the first and got arguably the best player in the draft and a rare defensive back prospect in Peterson. They also looked to upgrade their run game with Ryan Williams, a guy that I’m a fan of. They also get excellent value with Acho and Sturdivant. Very good draft for Arizona.

Atlanta Falcons
#6. Julio Jones, WR, Alabama
#91. Akeem Dent, LB, Georgia
#145. Jacquizz Rodgers, RB, Oregon State
#192. Matt Bosher, P, Miami (FL)
#210. Andrew Jackson, OG, Fresno State
#230. Cliff Matthews, DE, South Carolina

Grade: C+
Analysis: The Falcons made a huge splash on Thursday making the big leap for Julio Jones. Jones is a nice WR, but at what cost? The Falcons lacked picks this year and will next year over one WR. I’m a big Jacquizz Rodgers fan and he will give the Falcons speed and pass catching out of the backfield on 3rd downs to spell Michael Turner. But other than that I don’t see a lot of contributors and I don’t like drafting kickers and punters. I love that they drafted a former president though.

Baltimore Ravens
#27. Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
#58. Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland
#85. Jah Reid, OT, Central Florida
#123. Tandon Doss, WR, Indiana
#164. Chykie Brown, CB, Texas
#165. Pernell McPhee, DE, Mississippi State
#180. Tyrod Taylor, QB, Virginia Tech
#225. Anthony Allen, RB, Georgia Tech

Grade: B+
Analysis: The Ravens always seem to do a solid job. They had a need in the secondary and got a very talented Jimmy Smith, but let’s see if he stays out of trouble. They also filled the need for an vertical threat down the field with local Torrey Smith. They also potentially found a Jared Gaither replacement in Reid. Good value with McPhee in the 5th. An interesting choice is them going with Tyrod Taylor, Joe Flacco’s new backup will be a rookie.

Buffalo Bills
#3. Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
#34. Aaron Williams, CB, Texas
#68. Kelvin Sheppard, LB, LSU
#100. Da’Norris Searcy, S, North Carolina
#122. Chris Hairston, OT, Clemson
#133. Johnny White, RB, North Carolina
#169. Chris White, LB, Mississippi State
#206. Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond
#245. Michael Jasper, DT, Bethel (TN)

Grade: B-
Analysis: The Bills did okay. Getting Dareus and Aaron Williams puts them over the B mark. Two very good players that improve their defense. But I’m not so sure on the rest of their draft. Johnny White and Justin Rogers are two solid sleeper picks though.

Carolina Panthers

#1. Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
#65. Terrell McClain, DT, South Florida
#97. Sione Fua, DT, Stanford
#98. Brandon Hogans, CB, West Virginia
#132. Kealoha Pilares, WR, Hawaii
#166. Lawrence Wilson, LB, Connecticut
#203. Zachary Williams, C, Washington State
#244. Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn

Grade: C-
Analysis: The Panthers are gambling on the incredibly talented Cam Newton to be their franchise QB. But outside of that, I’m not that impressed. They had a big need at DT, but McClain and Fua are not very exciting picks there. They need a WR with Steve Smith on the way out, and all they got was Kealoha Pilares. An interesting pick late though is Ziemba, I think he has solid potential to start at RT and he’s worked with their new franchise QB before.

Chicago Bears
#29. Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
#53. Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State
#93. Chris Conte, S, California
#160. Nathan Enderle, QB, Idaho
#195. James Thomas, LB, West Virginia

Grade: C+
Analysis: I love what they did in the first two picks, two players fell further than they should’ve and they both filled big needs. But that is about it for their draft. Not a fan of Conte who only has played safety for one year and they took a backup QB who probably went a little too high.

Cincinnati Bengals
#4. A.J. Green, WR, Georgia
#35. Andy Dalton, QB, TCU
#66. Dontay Moch, DE, Nevada
#101. Clint Boling, OT, Georgia
#134. Robert Sands, S, West Virginia
#167. Ryan Whalen, WR, Stanford
#207. Korey Lindsey, CB, Southern Illinois
#246. Jay Finley, RB, Baylor

Grade: A
Analysis: The Bengals had one of the more interesting, and predictable drafts out there. I think everyone knew they’d take Green and then get a QB in the 2nd. It is a little suprising that Dalton fell into the 2nd with reports of his stock growing, but he will be a good fit in Jay Gruden’s west coast offense. Moch is an athletic freak in the 3rd, one of the more interesting guys nobody talks about.

Cleveland Browns
#21. Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor
#37. Jabaal Sheard, DE, Pittsburgh
#59. Greg Little, WR, North Carolina
#102. Jordan Cameron, TE, USC
#124. Owen Merecic, FB/LB, Stanford
#137. Buster Skrine, CB, Tennessee-Chattanooga
#150. Jason Pinkston, OT, Pittsburgh
#248. Eric Hagg, CB, Nebraska

Grade: B+
Analysis: The Browns did a good job not only with the guys they picked, but with the trade they made with Atlanta picking up an extra first rounder next year. Giving them more chances to rebuild their roster. As far as who they got, Taylor is a big run stuffer inside that take up space and open things up for his LBs. I also like both their 2nd round picks, Sheard is a quality pass rusher off the edge that can help Cleveland’s defense and Little is one of my favorite WRs in this draft. They drafted an amazing athlete at TE in Jordan Cameron, but it’s yet to be seen if he can actually play football. They also got a good story with Merecic who is a rare offense/defense player. But I’d imagine he’ll stick to fullback in the big leagues and contribute on special teams.

Dallas Cowboys
#9. Tyron Smith, OT, USC
#40. Bruce Carter, LB, North Carolina
#71. DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma
#110. David Arkin, OG, Missouri State
#143. Josh Thomas, CB, Buffalo
#176. Dwayne Harris, WR, East Carolina
#220. Shaun Chapas, FB, Georgia
#252. Bill Nagy, C, Wisconsin

Grade: C+
Analysis: The Cowboys adressed their need on the offensive line by adding Smith. Will he be able to play LT in the NFL. Bruce Carter is a very talented player and a nice add for the Cowboys, he’s comig off an injury but his talent is worth the pick. It’s not the best draft out there, but Dallas did a solid job.

Denver Broncos
#2. Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M
#45. Rahim Moore, S, UCLA
#46. Orlando Franklin, OT, Miami (FL)
#67. Nate Irving, LB, NC State
#108. Quinton Carter, S, Oklahoma
#129. Julius Thomas, TE, Portland State
#189. Mike Mohamed, LB, California
#204. Virgil Green, TE, Nevada
#247. Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma

Grade: B+
Analysis: They are getting a great player in Von Miller for sure. I thought they had a couple reaches in the 2nd even though I like Moore a lot. Nate Irving is a very good player and nice pickup for Denver. They also got not one, but two steals at tight end late. Julius Thomas is a great athlete and Virgil Green was a productive receiver for Colin Kaepernick.

Detroit Lions
#13. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn
#44. Titus Young, WR, Boise State
#57. Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois
#157. Douglas Hogue, LB, Syracuse
#209. Johnny Culbreath, OT, South Carolina State

Grade: B+
Analysis: They capitalized on the suprise QB run and had Nick Fairley fall to them in the first round. They got great value with Leshoure late in the 2nd, many experts believe he is better than Mark Ingram. They also got a speedy weapon for Matt Stafford in Titus Young. They didn’t really adress any big needs like CB or LB so they will have to turn to FA to fill those holes.

Green Bay Packers
#32. Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
#64. Randall Cobb, WR, Kentucky
#96. Alex Green, RB, Hawaii
#131. Davon House, CB, New Mexico State
#141. D.J. Williams, TE, Arkansas
#179. Caleb Schlauderaff, OG, Utah
#186. D.J. Smith, LB, Appalachian State
#197. Ricky Elmore, DE, Arizona
#218. Ryan Taylor, TE, North Carolina
#233. Lawrence Guy, DT, Arizona State

Grade: B
Analysis: Good value with Sherrod in the first round and they add more depth and talent to an offensive line that needs it. The Packers have really lacked a return game and Cobb can give them a boost in that area while adding depth to their WR core. They also got very good value with D.J. Williams in the fifth round.

Houston Texans
#11. J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin
#42. Brooks Reed, DE, Arizona
#60. Brandon Harris, CB, Miami (FL)
#127. Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech
#144. Shiloh Keo, S, Idaho
#152. T.J. Yates, QB, North Carolina
#214. Derek Newton, OT, Arkansas State
#254. Cheta Ozougwu, DE, Rice

Grade: B
Analysis: The Texans needed to adress their defense and did a solid job of doing that, spending all but two picks on defense, and one of the picks on offense was for a backup QB. They got great value with Brooks Reed in the second round. Harris is a solid add and should compete to help make a bad secondary a little better. They did a solid job, but nothing great.

Indianapolis Colts
#22. Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College
#49. Ben Ijalana, OT, Villanova
#87. Drake Nevis, DT, LSU
#119. Delone Carter, RB, Syracuse
#188. Chris Rucker, CB, Michigan State

Grade: B+
Analysis: The Colts needed to upgrade their offensive line and did just that in the first two rounds. Many scouts believe Castonzo is the best LT prospect in the draft and many are high on Ijalana to give the Colts two new tackles to protect Peyton Manning. Delone Carter also has the potential to get carries right away in the Colts’ backfield.

Jacksonville Jaguars
#10. Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri
#76. William Rackley, OT, Lehigh
#114. Cecil Shorts, WR, Mount Union
#121. Chris Prosinski, S, Wyoming
#147. Rod Issac, CB, Middle Tennessee State

Grade: B
Analysis: The Jaguars have gotten agressive looking for their QB of the future and they did so by trading up to get Blaine Gabbert who some scouts have projected as the best QB in the draft. Rackley and Shorts are interesting prospects from small schools with potential. This could be a HUGE draft for Jacksonville if Gabbert pans out, but not a lot of excitement elsewhere.

Kansas City Chiefs
#26. Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh
#55. Rodney Hudson, OG, Florida State
#70. Justin Houston, LB, Georgia
#86. Allen Bailey, DE, Miami (FL)
#118. Jalil Brown, CB, Colorado
#135. Ricky Stanzi, QB, Iowa
#140. Gabe Miller, LB, Oregon State
#199. Jerrell Powe, DT, Mississippi
#223. Shane Bannon, RB, Yale

Grade: A-
Analysis: I’m a fan of the Chiefs draft. Baldwin may have been a reach in the first, but he’s the kind of explosive playmaker they need to pair with Dwayne Bowe. They got outstanding value on Justin Houston in the 3rd round. This is a guy most people had going in the first round. There’s some work ethic concerns, but the guy has crazy talent. They also added another talented pass rusher not too far behind that with Allen Bailey. Ricky Stanzi is interesting as well, he’ll be a quality backup who may have what it takes to push for the starting job someday.
