Milla’s NASCAR All Star Race Experience

Well it has been a day since the race and I’m relaxing in my hotel room right now so I figured I’d post on my experience at the track from yesterday. It was first NASCAR race in person since I went to the Nationwide Series race at Daytona in July of 2007. Also my first race at a track other than Daytona. We left our hotel at almost noon and got to the track in about 25-30 minutes. On the way over there was a BIG traffic stoppage for a serious wreck around Lake Norman that halted traffic on the other side for MILES.

Once we got to the track we drove off into a little area and tailgated with some people my dad knows from business. We just sat in the shade eating BBQ and talked until around 4 when we walked up to the track area, I wanted to stop and shop around at merchandise trailers since I had 130 bucks on me. I didn’t buy any merchandise for my two favorite drivers, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski, since we are going to Penske Racing down the street on Wednesday and we get a discount on merchandise there. I bought a couple die casts but had a cool moment at the Michael Waltrip Racing trailer, I was buying a 1:64 diecast of David Reutimann’s car when I looked up and noticed he was standing there signing autographs. You had to spend 25 bucks to get a ticket to get in line but I didn’t feel like waiting so we tried to take a picture of him (unfortunatly our camera’s memory card was full so my dad had to delete all the memory in there and by the time he did Reutimann had left). We also walked by the stage where SPEED has their RaceDay show with Kyle Petty and Kenny Wallace (didn’t look like Kenny was there, I’m guessing he was in Iowa practicing his Nationwide car), I did get a picture of that so hopefully it came out.

After looking around outside, we went up to our seats for the first time at around 5:30. It was really neat because you could see the entire racetrack, something I’m not used to when attending races at Daytona. We also saw the giant HD screen for the first time, now the world’s largest screen surpassing the one in Cowboys Stadium. They only used a portion of it early on and unveiled the whole screen later on. The first thing they did was the Pennzoil Victory Challenge where Regan Smith, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano all got into Richard Petty Driving Experience cars and tried to do the best burnout. Pretty awesome having all that smoke fly into your face, ha. Kasey Kahne won, but most of us thought Kyle Busch did the best burnout. The entire time it happened AJ Allmendinger was standing in the flagstand right in front of us doing some work for SPEED.
