Why the Big East MUST Expand

The Big East must expand the number of teams in their football conference, and must do it very soon. Their current T.V. contract expires after the 2012 season. In 2012, the Big East will have 9 teams in the conference. That is the smallest number of team in any BCS Conference. The only other Conference that has less than 12 teams is the Big 12-2, with 10. The success of the Big 12-2 is still up in the air, and unlike the Big East, they have a couple of teams named Texas and Oklahoma that are hands down a much bigger T.V. draw than any team the Big East has.
The second reason why the Big East must expand, and quickly, is because if they do NOT, and the Big 4 (ACC, Big 10, Pac 12, and SEC) decide to expand, the Big East becomes target #1, especially for the ACC and Big 10. The only way to stop this is to expand to 12 teams, making life much more difficult for potential raiders.
So the Big East must expand. Who should they take? This is a difficult problem because they have so many non-football schools in their hoops conference. Adding more teams that are currently NOT members of the big East would make their hoops conference a joke. Here are my suggestions:
1. Take Army and Navy. These two teams have already basically said that if they joined the Big East, it would be for football only. That solves the hoops fiasco.
2. Take Villanova. IF ‘Nova can find a big enough facility to play their home games in. Being located near the Philadeplhia area, this really should not be a major problem. There are several stadiums, including Lincoln Fianacial Field and Citizen Bank Park that may work. ‘Nova is already in the Big East as far as hoops is concerned.
If those options fail, then Central Florida and East Carolina become options. The problem with that is the Big East would probably have to dump some hoops teams, like Depaul and Marquette.
No matter what they decide to do, the one decision they CANNOT afford to make is to do nothing. Remember, one of their members (TCU) has jumped conferences 4 times in 11 years. If the MWC decides to expand, and looks as if they have a good shot at becoming an AQ Conference, watch TCU beg to be allowed to rejoin that conference.
