“The Stack” 5-30-11

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s “The Stack” with me, Nathan Stacken. Hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial holiday weekend. Kind of a quiet weekend in the world of sports, but we found five of the biggest, in no particular order though we will start with Firday night’s big game seven on the ice. So let’s get right to “The Stack”:
1. Bruins heading to the Stanley Cup Finals.
In a tight, hard fough contest, the Boston Bruins upended the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals as the representative of the eastern conference where they will face the Vancouver Canucks who won the western conference. Game seven’s are always great, especially in hockey, and this one was no exception. Plenty of big hits, lots of shots and big saves. Each team had several opportunities to score before Boston’s Nathan Horton scored with 7:33 left in the third period to score the game’s only goal. The Bruins peppered the Lightning with shots. Dwayne Roloson made 37 saves for the Lightning. He was huge and kept the Lightning in the game until the end. The Lightning could not get shots on goal against the Bruins and Tim Thomas. It seemed like every other shot was blocked by a Bruins or partially deflected or just got to Thomas. He didn’t have to work as hard to Roloson. Tampa Bay will be sticking around for a number of years. First year GM Steve Yzerman has done a great job putting this team together. The Bruins have a tall task in front of them, the Vancouver Canucks. It should be a great Stanley Cup Final and it all begins Wednesday night at 8:00 ET on NBC.
2. Cavaliers trying to get number two pick in NBA Draft.
Already posssessing the number one overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to get the number two overall pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a three-team trade according to reports. The third team involved is the Detroit Pistons. Cleveland would take on and absorb the Pistons’ Rip Hamilton contract. Cleveland would then get the Timberwolves number two pick and the Timberwolves would get Cleveland’s fourth overall pick and Detroit’s eighth pick. Reports say that Detroit does not want to do the deal and they want players. This is a very interesting proposition. Cleveland would draft Duke’s Kyrie Irving number one overall and then use the second pick on Arizona’s Derrick Williams. That would make the Cleveland Cavaliers instantly relevant and make them a team to watch next year and in years to come. Think of that team. It would be outstanding. The trade doesn’t make sense for the Timberwolves. The talent level in this draft is thin. When you have the second overall pick and the best player and a star-to-be in Derrick Williams is there, you have to take him. Why trade? Should the Timberwolves make this trade, they once again prove why they are the most dysfunctional team in the NBA.
