“The Stack” 6-23-11

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s “The Stack” with me, Nathan Stacken. The NBA Draft is tonight and we will have a preview, though it will be nothing like our NFL Draft preview. There are a few other things going on in the world of sports so let’s get right to “The Stack”:
1. Baseball’s biggest stories from yesterday.
It was a pretty quiet day on the diamond considering every team was playing. In the nightcap of their double-header with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Chris Heisey hit three homeruns. He is their lead-off hitter and became only the third Reds player in franchise history to hit three homeruns in a game in the lead-off spot. The others were Pete Rose and Jay Bruce.
The San Diego Padres won a wet game against the Boston Red Sox 5-1 yesterday to take two of three. There were four rain delays and the game was called in the eighth inning after the fourth rain delay. It wasy a soggy affair.
Cliff Lee continued his dominance last night for the Philadelphia Phillies as he and the Phillies shutout the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0. Lee went the distance, giving up just six hits over his nine innings of work. The Cardinals have been slumping a lot lately and losing Albert Pujols does not help.
Finally, the San Francisco Giants cooled off the hotest team in baseball, the Minnesota Twins yesterday, 5-1. Since their eight run first inning Tuesday night, the Twins have scored just two runs in the last seventeen innings. The Giants have great pitching so that is not a huge surprise, but you won’t win many games, if any when you score two runs in seventeen innings. The two teams wrap up their series today in San Francisco with first pitch at 3:45 ET.
2. Peterson appologizes, Churchill downs damaged, NBA trades.
A whole hodgepodge of headlines here before we get to the NBA Draft preview. First to Adrian Peterson. He has been in the news over the last few days for not being able to attend Adrian Peterson Football Camp in Norman, Oklahoma. ProCamps, who partners with Peterson to put the camp on, only confused the situation more by issuing a statement that Peterson would be at a taping at the NFL Network and wouldn’t be able to make it. That turned out to not be exactly true, and ProCamps came out and appologized, and said that the dates conflicted with Peterson and they did not do a great job of communicating with him. For his part, Peterson came out and apologized saying that he was sorry he couldn’t attend the camp this year. He has been to the camp the last three years. It is kind of a PR nightmare, so Peterson better make it to the camp next year. With the camp costing kids 199 dolars, they expect to see Adrian Peterson and he better do everything in his power not to disappoint.
Severe weather tore through the Louisville area yesterday and the famed Churchill Downs did not escape mother nature’s wrath. Several horsebarns were damaged and horses were moved to areas of safety at private farms. The National Weather Service is inspecting the area today to see if a tornado touched down at the famous racetrack. If a tornado did hit, it would be the first known tornado to hit Churchill Downs ever. Races are canceled for today, but they hope to resume again tomorrow.
Finally, there have been plenty of rumored NBA trades out there leading into the NBA Draft tonight. The Phoenix Suns shot down the Steve Nash to Minnesota trade rumors. The Lakers and Timberwolves have discussed a couple trades, but were unable to agree on any of them. One trade the Lakers may indeed make is sending Lamar Odom and Luke Walton to the Philadelphia 76ers for Andre Iguodala. That trade has legs and will probably get done. There are plenty of teams looking to trade, including the San Antonio Spurs, the Timberwolves and the Charlotte Bobcats. It will be interesting to see what happens today leading up to the draft and then what trades happen in the draft tonight, because there are always trades in the NBA Draft. One other note on the Timberwolves, they reportedly fired head coach Kurt Rambis after two years. Who are they going to turn to now? Who knows. Just another day in the most dysfunctional team in the NBA.
3. NBA Draft preview.
Again, it’s not nearly going to be as extensive as the NFL Draft preview, but the NBA Draft is tonight with coverage beginning at 7:30 ET on ESPN. I’ll give my top five picks and who else you should be watching for tonight…
