“The Stack” 7-5-11

We’re back. Hello everyone and welcome to today’s “The Stack” with me, Nathan Stacken. After taking a holiday off, it’s time we get right back into the swing of it, recapping some bigger stories from the weekend and what happened on Independence Day. So without further delay, let’s take a look at what made “The Stack”:
1. Team USA pounds Colombia.
We flashback to Saturday where team USA had an easy time with Colombia winning 3-0 to earn another three points in the women’s world cup. They are now 2-0-0 with six points and will move on to the second round. Heather O’Reilly scored for the USA in the eleventh minute to give them a 1-0 lead. Early in the second half, Christie Rampone found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Carli Lloyd added another goal in the 57th minute to make it 3-0. Abby Wambach had many chances in this game, but could not find the back of the net. Perhaps she is feelinig a bit of the pressure. She hasn’t scored much lately and that is unlike her. Once she puts the ball in the net, it will feel like the world has lifted off her shoulders and she won’t have to talk to the media about why she hasn’t been scoring lately. Team USA’s final game in group play is Wednesday against Sweden at 2:45 ET on ESPN. This will be a tough match, but team USA should be able to win. Today’s games are:
Group B: England vs. Japan 12:15 ET New Zealand vs. Mexico 12:15 ET
Group A: Canada vs. Nigeria 2:45 ET France vs. Germany 2:45 ET
All games can be seen on ESPN or ESPN2.
2. Novak Djokovic wins Wimbledon.
Just by making the finals at Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic had already won. He was going to be ranked the number one tennis player in the world. But, for good measure, a Wimbledon championship would come along too as Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to win his first Wimbledon championship. And for the fun of it, he ate a bit of the grass on the court that had to have made LSU football coach Les Miles smile. It was a great tennis match with some very nice shots from both players. Djokovic has only lost once this year in the French Open. He has played fantastic this year. His hard work and dedication finally paid off. He now gives Nadal a rivaly that was started to wane with Nadal against Roger Federer. Expect to see Djokovic vs. Nadal in many more finals in the next few years.
3. Joey Chestnut does it again.
For those of you not famaliar with competitive eating or Joey Chestnut, all you need to know is 4th of July, Nathan’s Hotdogs, ten minutes. That is how much time competitive eaters had to down as many hotdogs as they could at Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest on Coney Island yesterday. It is about as American as it gets. Sure you can be grossed out by grown men gorging themselves with hotdogs and buns. But you also can’t help but watch because it is kind of amazing to see them eat that many hotdogs in such a short period of time. Once again, Joey Chestnut rose above the rest, shoveling 62 hotdogs in ten minutes to retain the yellow mustard belt and be the five-time reigning Nathan’s Hotdog Eating champion. Is he an athlete? Most people would say no. But, the amount of time it takes to train and the difficult stomach and breathing workouts these guys do does give a solid argument. Major League Eating is the competitive eating equivalent to the NFL. I think Chestnut is an athlete. I know I couldn’t do what he can. Never. Congrats again Chestnut on the 62 dogs you snarfed down yesterday. You deserve the championship.
4. MLB announces AL an NL All-Star rosters…
