Davey Allison: Remembering a Racing Man and His Family

davey1On Wednesday, it will be coming up on 18 years since popular racing hero Davey Allison died in a helicopter crash. I remember that day, still, vividly and following the story for the next few days. You didn’t have to be a NASCAR fan or stock car fan to know who he was. It was like Tiger Woods. You don’t have to follow golf to know who he is either. In those days you didn’t have the coverage you do now on the sport, mostly due the internet. You went to races, or you read newspapers, and still I knew who he was. He wasn’t a NASCAR superstar to the likes of Jeff Gordon or some of them today. But he had a warm smile, and was approachable and kids, teenagers and even adults were just drawn to him.

When remembering the crash, keep in mind, Alan Kulwicki had just died three months prior. And the sport was already rocked.

Davey once said, “If I get killed in a race car, I’m gonna die with a smile on my face.”
