“The Stack” 8-2-11

Hello everyone and welcome to today’s “The Stack” with me, Nathan Stacken. We have a few things to get to so let’s get right to it and see what made “The Stack” today:
1. Randy Moss retires.
Oh Randy. It’s just Randy being Randy. Randy Moss retired from the NFL yesterday after thirteen NFL seasons, in which he put up electrifying numbers while also stupifying us with some of behavior and antics, both on and off the field. Here are some of his numbers:
-
954 receptions (10th all-time)
14,854 receiving yards (6th all-time)
153 receiving TD’s (2nd all-time)
NFL single season record 23 receiving TD’s with Patriots in 2007.
Most TD receptions in a rookie year (17, 1998).
And these are just some of the many wonderful statistics that Moss put up. Yet, he is perhaps most famous for saying that ” I play when I want to play.” Then there’s other incidents like squirting a referee with a water bottle in a playoff loss to the St. Louis Rams, walking off the field with a few seconds left in a game against Washington, mooned the Packers crowd in a playoff game against Green Bay in 2007 and constantly taking plays off as well as quitting on teams like the Oakland Raiders. For as much talent as he had, Moss was just not tough mentally. The problem is, you could tell he wasn’t trying a lot. It might be a little more difficult to tell if a player doesn’t give you maximum effort, but Moss’ explosiveness was so great that when he didn’t give max effort, it showed.
Moss was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1998 and had a dynamic rookie year. The Vikings ultimately choked in the NFC Championship game against the Atlanta Falcons. After Cris Carter left, Moss didn’t have someone to lean on and learn from. He had to be the leader. I don’t think Moss was ready for that. He was traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2005, but it turned out to be a disaster. The New England Patriots traded for him in the 2007 NFL Draft and it turned out to be a career resurrecting move. He saw great years with the Patriots along with Tom Brady, but last year after the Patriots traded him back to Minnesota, it stunned Moss. Vikings fans welcomed him back, but he just couldn’t make the same plays and ultimately his behavior and antics got to the point where then Vikings head coach Brad Childress said enough was enough and cut Moss after a month. Moss was claimed by the Tennessee Titans, but disappeared down there. His agent said he was in freakish shape, yet the offers did not come the way Moss thought they would and that is ultimately what made him retire. Moss is one of the top five receivers ever to play the game and despite not winning a Super Bowl, I think he is a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer. Let’s hope the media thinks that way too. I wish it would have worked out better Randy. Wish you could have been a Viking forever and dwon a championship or two. You were one of the best athletes to step on the field during your career. And don’t forget, when you go buy something always pay with “straight cash homey.”
