Those who are hoping to see a rematch of the French Open semifinal between No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer can breathe easy. After one round, both are still alive and neither have dropped a set.

OK, that’s not exactly what you would call a surprise, but it’s still noteworthy.

Federer hadn’t been playing well since losing in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon to Jo Wilfried Tsonga. He wasn’t exactly dominant in his opening round win at the US Open, but still won by a convincing 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 final.

If Federer can still do that when playing poorly, he’s still capable of winning when his game reaches its peak.

As for Djokovic, the concern around him was his shoulder. He was dominant in his first round win, taking the first set 6-0 and jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second. At that point, his opponent Conor Niland retired from the match, giving Djokovic and his shoulder an extra set of rest.
