The Baseball Index: National League Playoff Update: Friday Edition

jason-motteSince our playoff update was a popular post on Wednesday, we are going to make this a regular thing up until the last day of the season. Let’s recap the meaningful National League action from yesterday.

National League Wild Card

Atlanta Braves: DNP

Wild Card Lead: 2 games

St. Louis Cardinals: Lost to New York Mets 8-6: Where do I begin? The Cardinals held a 6-2 lead going into the ninth and then their bullpen had a meltdown of epic proportions. Yes, Rafael Furcal‘s error on a sure double play ball didn’t help, but Jason Motte, Marc Rzepczynski, and Fernando Salas were terrible. They walked four batters and only threw 27 strikes out of the 53 pitches they threw.

The Met’s scored six runs in the ninth to hand the Cardinals a crushing defeat. It was a big time loss, but not the end of the world. Being two games out with six to go is not the worst thing in the world.

Wild Card Deficit: 2 games

San Francisco Giants: Lost to Los Angeles Dodgers 8-2: Madison Bumgarner wasn’t his usual solid self and now the Giants’ playoff chances are pretty much on life support. Bumgarner gave up nine hits and four runs in just four innings of work. Matt Kemp went 4-for-5 with a two-run HR to pace the Dodgers.

Wild Card Deficit: 4 games
