In Game 5 of the 1984 World Series, Kirk Gibson came up to the plate with runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the eighth with the Detroit Tigers up 5-4. San Diego Padres’ manager Dick Williams to have a strategy session with Rich “Goose” Gossage.
Williams wanted to walk Gibson, but Gossage wanted to pitch to him. There was that famous shot of Sparky Anderson telling Gibson “He don’t wanna walk you. He don’t wanna walk you.” Gossage pitched to Gibson launched a ball deep into the Detroit night that sealed the victory and a World Series championship for the Tigers.
Fast forward 27 years later and the shoe is on the other foot for Gibson.
