Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin’s hope that common sense would prevail in the case of Troy Polamalu using a cell phone on the sidelines did not happen. An NFL spokesman confirmed that Polamalu has been fined for using a cell phone on the sidelines.

In last week’s game, the Steelers safety exited the game with concussion-like symptoms and headed to the sidelines where he borrowed a cell phone to call his wife to inform he was OK.

League rules prohibit the use of cell phones, a league spokesman said.

“Possession of cell phones, PDAs or other electronic equipment in the bench area during a game is strictly prohibited by league policy beginning 90 minutes before kickoff through the end of the game.”
