Steelers Chronicle: Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison Will Never Learn Without Discipline

Some guys just don’t get it. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is one of “those guys.” This guy was fined a quarter million dollars in 2010 alone for illegal hits, yet he still delivers them on a regular basis. Harrison’s latest was a helmet-to-facemask blow on Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy in a 14-3 Steelers win on Thursday night. It’s time for the NFL to step up and send a message to Harrison and all other players who insist on delivering illegal hits.

I’m an old school football guy; I prefer stifling defenses over high-flying offenses any day. Any football coach has to love a guy who hits hard and enjoys doing it. However, Harrison is hurting his team by not taming his aggressiveness.

Sure, Harrison’s illegal hits are hurting his wallet, but he doesn’t notice. $125,000 in fines to Harrison is like $12.50 for you and me. How do you get his attention then? Suspensions. Notice that word in the plural form.

Yes, Harrison was suspended for one game for his hit on McCoy. His reaction was a simple “LOL!!!” tweet. The Steelers are a big-time playoff contender and Harrison is a leader of their incredible defensive unit. If NFL commissioner Roger Goodell would develop the courage to suspend Harrison for the rest of the season, he’d get everyone’s attention.
