“The Stack” 12-27-11

stack_attack17We said we’d come back from our mini-holiday vacation if something big happened in the sports world. See what it was in “the stack” for today Tuesday, December 27th which starts right now:

1. Drew Brees sets passing record in steamroll of Falcons.

Something big happened last night in the New Orleans Saints 45-16 demolition of the Atlanta Falcons. That something was Drew Brees surpassing Dan Marino’s mark of 5,084 passing yards in a single season, which Marino set back in 1984. Brees passed it late in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles late in the fourth quarter. The touchdown pass gave Brees 5,087 yards for the season and there is still one more game to go. Sure it probably seemed like the Saints were running up the score, but I’m sure Brees and head coach Sean Payton did not want to field questions about it all week, especially if Brees was going to be a few yards short of the historic mark.

Of course people will say Marino’s single season record was more astonishing and much more difficult to do, because the NFL today has become passing league and quarterbacks and throwing yards in bunches. To a degree, that is true. But we shouldn’t take away from what Brees has accomplished, because it is truly remarkable. The precision and accuracy for which you have to have to even think about reaching 5,000 passing yards is tough enough. Brees has made it look almost effortless. The Saints offense is a well-oiled machine and they are very difficult to stop. A lot of hard work from everyone goes into this and Brees was acknowledged that in the Saints locker room after the game. He is not a selfish player at all and it is nice to see him be rewarded for all of his hard work. As he said though, this is a team award and though his name will be the only one that makes it to the record book, everyone had a part in it. Congrats Brees on a terrific achievement and settingi the record. Couldn’t happen to a better person.
