“The Stack” 1-6-11
After computer issues prevented us from blogging Thursday, “the stack” is back today ready to preview this weekend’s NFL playoff wild card matchups. First though, time to do a quick recap of the Orange Bowl that West Virginia absolutely dominated. Wow! Never saw this one coming at all. I don’t think Clemson’s defense even got off the bus. Oh they did? Shoot, could have fooled me. They were an absolute embarrassment. The Mountaineers set records for points in a half (49) and points in a bowl game (70). The game was close, 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Thought it would be a barn burner. Once the second quarter started, the only team making barns burn were the Mountaineers. They were on a fire, but it wasn’t just the offense that played well. The defense forced a fumble and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. That was the momentum shift in the game as West Virginia built a 49-20 lead at half. They breezed to an easy 70-33 victory. No one should bet against the Mountaineers in bowl season. They almost find a way to win games. The Sugar Bowl back in 2007. The Fiesta Bowl a couple of years later. This team knows how to win as an underdog. It was a bad showing for Clemson. Geno Smith threw for 401 yards against their defense, while their own quarterback Tajh Boyd threw two picks and only 250 yards. He did have two touchdowns as well. The electric Sammy Watkins had less than 100 yards receiving (66). Maybe next year will be different for Clemson. In the end though, they always seem to disappoint.
