BREAKING: Former Penn State Football Coach Joe Paterno Dies
Joe Paterno, who won more Division I college football games than any other head coach, died at the age of 85.
His family issued a statement Sunday morning.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today,” the family said. “His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.”
Paterno spent 46 years as the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions before he was ousted for the way he handled a child sex abuse scandal that rocked all of college football.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer last November. He entered the hospital on Jan. 13 for complications stemming from his cancer treatment.
Hundreds of Penn State students held a candlelight vigil near a statute of Paterno as news of his declining health spread Saturday night.
