“The Stack” 1-30-12
It’s Monday and “The Stack” has no football games to recap. Oh the humanity. Fortunately there was an epic grand slam final and upsets galore on the college basketball court. We’ll try to find a few other things to talk about too, as well as another Super Bowl storyline. Now let’s see what made “the stack” for today, Monday, January 30:
1. Djokovic outlasts Nadal in tennis match for the ages.
I felt exhausted just watching this match. Novak Djokovic won his fifth major of his career (third Australian Open) in a five set marathon over Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5. The thrilling match lasted a record five hours fifty-three minutes and it was entertaining from start to finish. It didn’t get done until almost 2 AM local time Monday morning. Djokovic looked a little rattled early on hitting some shots into the net in the first set. That’s a little understandable, after all he did play a five hour match they day before. The number of great shots by both players in this match easily was in the hundreds. Multiple times, this match looked like it was going to one player or the other. After Djokovic won the third set to get up 2-1, it looked like he had all of the mometum and would win in four sets. And he had 40-love lead over Nadal in the fourth set, ready to take home the prize, but Nadal battled back, won the game and eventually the set.
