The Draft War Room: 2012 Wide Receiver rankings (pre Combine)
I will be doing a top 5 for each position. And these rankings are pre-Combine. I reserve the right to change my mind later this month.
Wide Receiver
1. Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State, 6’1″, 210 lbs )
In the 2010 season, Blackmon had 111 receptions for 1,782 yards and 20 touchdowns on his way to winning the Biletnikoff award. Had he left school after that season, he would have been a first round pick and could have challenged AJ Green for the top receiver overall. Instead, he returned to school and put up another 121 receptions for 1,522 yards and 18 touchdowns on the way to his second Biletnikoff award. He is far and away the best receiver prospect available and a lock for a top 5 selection. He has just about everything that you look for in an NFL receiver… good size, great speed, amazing hands, excellent body control and he’s tough… real tough (played the bowl game with a leg infection).
2. Michael Floyd (Notre Dame, 6’3?, 220lbs)
Floyd is a bit of a mystery. He has the talent and physical attributes to be the top receiver prospect in this class. Yet, he has had some off the field issues in the past that could put some teams off. He’s had outstanding production over the past few seasons, culminating with 100 catches for 1,100 yards and 9 touchdowns this past year. He has decent speed for his size and good body control, which will make him a big asset in the red zone. But it still comes back to off the field issues. It’s difficult to say what affect these will have on his draft stock. But since he’s kept his nose clean for the past year, I expect him to be the second receiver taken off the board. Philadelphia seems like a logical landing spot.
