“The Stack” 2-8-12

stack_attack12Not going to lie. We had to dig deep to find some really good stories to talk about in Wednesday’s “The Stack.” So hope you like what we have picked out and as always, if there is something you want me to talk about, let me know. Now let’s see what made “the stack” for today, Wednesday, February 8:

1. Memphis to join Big East.

Conference shake ups and realignment had a nice little break, but Memphis has started everything back up again, announcing it will move to the Big East starting in the 2013-14 season. Memphis has been one of the best teams in college basketball recently, dominating Conference USA. That was when head coach John Calipari was there. Josh Pastner has done a decent job there in his wake, but improvement needs to be made. The football team is sorry. But it is a good move for Memphis. They can compete with the rest of the Big East in basketball. Central Florida, Houston, SMU, Navy, San Diego State and Boise State will be joining the Big East soon. Departing is West Virginia (Big 12) and Syracuse and Pittsburgh (ACC). Not sure all of these teams the Big East is adding can replace the top athletic powers the latter three are leaving behind, but Boise State will definitely help for football and Memphis will help for basketball.

The overall thought I have though is that enough is enough. Stop making it about the money and think about the student athlete. The NCAA and its bigger BCS conferences continue to just go for the almight dollar at the expense of how great college athletics already is. I’m not a fan of conference realignment. Never have, never will be. But, it is an inevitable change and hopefully we won’t see too many other drastic moves to follow.

2. Giants celebrate Super Bowl with downtown parade.
