SPORTSTATER: 2012 MLB Preview: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Angels over the off-season loaded up for Ranger. The Texas Rangers have won the AL West the last 2 straight years and also have been to the World Series in both seasons. The Angels looking to get back to their first Fall Classic since winning it all in 2002 first went out and took the Rangers ace CJ Wilson then followed it up by signing former Cardinal All-Star first baseman Albert Pujols. With Pujols they now have 1 superstar and 2 quality first basemen on their roster. While Pujols will man the bag most of the season it meant finding room for Mark Trumbo who will spend spring training trying to learn to play third. Kendrys Morales who missed all of last season after breaking his leg in a home run celebration also is back to full health. Now where to play them? While Trumbo could fall into a DH role and Morales being the DH when Trumbo is in the field but only if Trumbo is able to play good enough defense.

The more likely scenario is to play Alberto Callaspo at third more often as he gives the Angels the defense they need and he is not a bad hitter, he just doesn’t have Trumbo’s power. Callaspo hit for a .288 average a season ago and takes a base on balls more than he strikes out with a K every 9.89 at bats. Trumbo meanwhile will strikeout 1 in every 4.5 at bats. With Callaspo at third they are more of a threat in the lineup to score runs, so look for Trumbo to be sharing some time at DH with Morales.
