Late last night, after Ferris State beat the Union Dutchmen (NY), the Carolina Hurricanes announced that they signed undrafted free agent Jeremy Welsh.
The 23 year old power forward, listed at 6’3’’, joined Union after playing for the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. In his first season (2009 – 10), Welsh played in all 39 games for Union picking up 19 points (10 goals / 9 assists.) The following season (2010 – 11), Welsh played in all 40 games with Union. He was second in goals scored (16), fourth in assists (21), and second in total points (37) and was a key player on Union’s nation – leading power play unit (29.5%) – He capped the season off by receiving ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) Third Team honors. This past season (2011 – 12), Welsh once again played in all 40 games for Union. He scored a career, and team, best 27 goals – which shattered the school’s single – season goal record previously held by Mario Valery – Trabucco and was good enough to rank him fourth in the NCAA. Welsh was named the most outstanding player of the ECAC Championship and Most Outstanding Play of the NCAA East Regional in Bridgeport. In total Welsh scored 53 goals and picked up 47 assists for 100 points with Union, becoming the 21st player in school history to do so.
