The ‘redeem team,’ as I’m calling them this season will take the field in Week 1 in Cleveland to face a Browns, a team that has seemingly been rebuilding since 1984. The NFL odds are favoring the Eagles big in this one, but the public seems to think that the Browns have a shot at covering as large underdogs at home. Can a rookie quarterback and running back take on the mighty Eagles?
Philadelphia had a rough start to last season and couldn’t recover, even after making a nice late season run. That will just have to be put to good use this season, as the Eagles are favorites to win the NFC East, and are one of the top five favorites in the NFL odds to win the Super Bowl. I understand that the Eagles are a great team, but tap the brakes for me slightly.
The Eagles had some major problems last season which led to them being 8-8. Defense was the main one. For a defense that was supposed to be top five and dominant, they ended the season somewhat average. Their pass defense was supposed to be unstoppable, but nine other teams had better pass defenses, including the Browns. Their run defense was pretty bad, but they finished the season 16th against the run.
If they can tighten the D, they will run away with the NFC East. In this game, I think it’s safe to say they will win. The question of them blowing out the Browns in Week 1 on the road is a different discussion. Do I think it’s possible; absolutely. However, I do think the spread is a wash and I’m laying off.
