The Sharks did all of their scoring in the first period and that’s all they needed as they spoiled the home opener for the Edmonton Oilers with a 6-3 win. San Jose scored six times in the opening frame, with Couture and Marleau each netting two and recording an assist. Joe Thornton added three helpers. The first period outburst tied a Sharks franchise record for goals in a period.
No. 2 Star: Michael Ryder, Dallas Stars
Ryder provided all of the scoring for Dallas popping one in early in the first period and one early in the third period as the Stars slipped by the Detroit Red Wings 2-1. Cody Eakin chipped in two assists, while Kari Lehtonen made 39 saves.
