Have you ever seen Inside North Korea from Nat Geo? These people truly believe he is responsible for all that goes on. When they let a doctor in to perform eye surgery, Jong-il gets the credit because he cares so much about his people, he'll let a foreigner in to heal them. When they finally open their eyes for the first time, they are so pleased they can finally see the Leader, and praise a photo of him on the wall.

That's what happens when you isolate your country in the way North Korea has. The citizens have no idea what goes on in other countries, so anything Kim Jong-il says is true. They don't know anything else.
