QB's record-setting deal not a cause for envy in other sports
No NFL player has ever received the kind of guaranteed money Drew Brees wrangled out of the Saints on Friday—$60 million of the $100 million called for in his new 5-year deal. And yet it isn't among the top 50 in sports and seems downright puny compared to whoppers such as the $275 million guaranteed Alex Rodriguez or the $136 million for Kobe Bryant. In fact, the New Jersey Nets just gave a $61 million deal to somebody named Brook Lopez, a 7-footer who rebounds slightly better than a dead man. That the biggest cash cow in sports puts its players in more peril for less money than the NBA and MLB might be the real Bountygate.
