I recently took a written beating for saying that I thought Joe Mauer was helped greatly by being a catcher, in his recent naming as the American League’s Most Valuable Player for 2009.

With that being said, is Mauer not only the best catcher in the game, is he also the best player in MLB? Let’s not throw pitchers in this mix, I would like to be able to compare “apples with apples.”

Minnesota Twins backstop and hometown hero Joe Mauer nailed his 11th home run of the season Monday afternoon during a two out, pinch-hit appearance in the ninth inning against Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. On his day off. The Sox went on to win the opener of the four-game series 6-5, but Twins fans couldn’t help but walk away from the loss with a curious smile on their faces.

It’s not like the entire world of baseball wasn’t aware that Man Muscles was awesome before this season began. He is, of course, a two-time All-Star, double-time Ladies and gentlemen…. Joe F**king Mauer.American League batting champ, and all-around nice guy.

Two games, two serious issues.

The first, on Sunday. The Milwaukee Brewers were playing the Minnesota Twins. In the 7th inning, Joe Mauer was hit by a pitch, however the umpire called it a foul ball. Mauer strutted down the line, only to be called back. The umpire was saying that he fouled the ball off, and not off the hand. The issue is not if he got hit or not, the issue is after saying it was foul, the manager for the Twins, Ron Gardenhire came out to argue. He went out, Mauer showed his hand, and somehow, the ump changed the call. Milwaukee’s manager Ken Macha immediately came out and tried to get an explanation. However, the overturned decision stuck, and Macha quietly left the field. With bases loaded, the very next pitch, and I do mean very next pitch, Justin Morneau took it deep into the right field bleachers.

I’m a woman who has been accused of being more passionate about baseball than I am about my past boyfiends. That may be true (where are you, Mr. Right?) but it doesn’t mean I’m unable to spot a smokin’ hot baseball player when I see one.

An unidentified Fox Sports analyst has recently come up with a list of the Top 10 Hottest Baseball Players. What the requirements were to land on this list, I have no idea. It’s so incredibly wrong in so many ways, I felt the need to speak out about it.

Jimmy Rollins, Barry Zito and Ichiro Suzuki as your top three? Umm, no.
