First, let me say I don’t hate MLB, in fact when I was a young man (I’m 44 now), I loved the major league game. I ate, drank and slept baseball. And right up until 1994 I loved baseball.
Some of my fondest memories of my late grandfather (God rest his soul) are of us watching Ranger and Yankee games together. We rooted for the Rangers and always rooted against the Yankees. My second favorite team was the one that beat the Yankees.
This was supposed to be a day of great joy. The best players in the world are coming together in Anaheim, California to play in the 2010 MLB All Star game. However, on the morning of this day, the baseball world was shocked to learn of the passing of one of, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say THE most influential man in baseball history, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.
On January 3, 1973 George Michael Steinbrenner and minority group of partners purchased the New York Yankees.
From the time he took control of the team to the time of his death Steinbrenner has never shied away from the spotlight and brought the team back to the dominance and history that the team has prided themselves [...]
UPDATE: June 29, 2010. Interleague play is over. Once again, the AL dominated (134-118), which they have done for 6 out of the last 7 years. As regards the contenders, some notes first, especially in light of the uneven level of difficulty in the interleague schedule:
* BOSTON: Probably had the best result for a team with a difficult schedule (5 of their 6 series were against teams over [...]
With the MLB All Star Game, the fans are given a chance to decide the All Stars for each team.
With the MLB All Star Game less than a month away though, YOU the Sportsjabber members can vote on who you believe should play in the All Star game in Anaheim.
The way it will work is [...]
While it was nice to see the Phillies leave Boston on a positive note with a 5-3 win against the Red Sox, it’s difficult not to look ahead and dread the Phils’ three-game series in New York against the red-hot Yankees.
The two teams have been on two completely different paths this season as the Yankees have seemingly breezed [...]
The Red Sox seemed out of it a month ago, and yet here they are. Certainly this most competitive division; even with the Orioles at at an MLB-worst 19-43, the AL EAST is 23 games over .500.
AL EAST: As predicted, this is a red-hot race. The three pre-season favorites are all within 5 games, and Toronto[...] The two surprises in my book: [...]
Power rankings (6/7 update)
1. Tampa Bay Rays - The Rays have been scuffling lately, but the Rays still have the best squad thus far in the majors. The offense is due for an offensive explosion, and while the pitching hasn’t been as good as it was in the beginning of the season, it has still [...]
Three years ago, the New York Yankees brought up a young reliever named Joba Chamberlain. He wowed people in his first year pitching with 0.38 ERA in 19 games.
In that first year though, the Yankees stood to something that good coined the “Joba Rules”, which was the Yankees conserving the amount of innings Chamberlain would [...]
It ’s a mute an unimportant point whether the 15 minutes of fame that Dallas Braden began accruing after his pugnacious rant at Alex Rodriguez is extended much longer. And simply pitching a perfect game, as stellar an achievement as that is, is no guarantee of continuing fame or sustained success, especially if it’s a singular occurrence in an otherwise mediocre career, a plateau that Braden is still looking up at.
